An account is given of the development of tropical medicine in Leiden, The Netherlands, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Leidsche Vereeniging ter Bevordering van de Studie der Tropische Geneeskunde (Leiden Society for the Promotion of the Study of Tropical Medicine) on 14th May 1914. In 1920 the name was changed to Vereeniging Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde Rotterdam - Leiden (Association of the Instititute for Tropical Medicine, Rotterdam - Leiden) to reflect the growing importance of Rotterdam as a source of patients and finance. The growth of interest in tropical medicine over 75 years, the founding academics and professors, and the beginning of research projects concerning Toxoplasma, malaria, amoebiasis, schistosomiasis and trypanosomiasis are discussed. The other article in this issue (M.J. van Lieburg, pp. 45-73) is entitled "A hospital for seamen and tropical diseases: the role of the harbour hospital in Rotterdam in the study of tropical medicine". The 2 papers contain numerous black-and-white photographs, and both should be of value to all interested in the history of tropical medicine.Carolyn A. Brown.
