5 out of 35 patients exhibited lactose malabsorption following vagotomy in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. 3 of these patients had already exhibited lactose malabsorption symptoms before the operation and in only 1 of the patients could the lactose malabsorption be regarded as a consequence of the operation. No relationship could be demonstrated between lactose malabsorption and vagotomy diarrhoea.
