This paper presents the results of a study undertaken to assess the comparative effectiveness of 'Munadi' and the public address system in creating awareness of an event in a rural area of India. Munadi is the traditional way of making announcements in rural India and involves dissemination of information followed by drum beating. It was found that the folk medium gave more widespread awareness of information than the public address system. This indicates the limited role of sophisticated communications media in rural areas.
