The correspondents surveyed 133 fourth-year medical students in a university in Queensland for Enterobius infection. Each completed a questionnaire on their personal circumstances and previous infections and treatment, and 119 provided self-administered perianal sticky-tape slides. No eggs were found on the slides, but 30 students believed they had been infected in the past and 52 had taken anthelmintics for enterobiasis. As 73 students experienced pruritis ani, it is concluded that enterobiasis is not the major cause of this symptom in the majority of sufferers.Sheila M. Crewe.
