104 patients entered the cooperative study AML I/82 (BFM-AML-78) of the working group "Pediatric Hematology and Oncology" of the GDR. 4 patients died prior therapy. 14 patients died during the first 4 weeks of therapy, 13 did not respond to therapy. 73 of the 100 protocol patients attained a complete remission. The liefe table probabilities for disease free survival and event free interval after 8 years are 34 % (SD 5 %) and 46 % (SD 7 %) respectively. 33patients relapsed; there was only 1 patient with CNS relapse. The most important prognostic factors were the FAB type with a favourable outcome of patients with M 1 (DFS 71 %, EFI 76%) and a bad prognosis of patients with M 5 morphology (DFS 19 %, EFI 29 %) and the initial blast cells counts with a bad prognosis of patients with initial blast counts over 100 × 103/1.
