A review of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was conducted in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in order to analyse clinical and epidemiological aspects of AMI in patients less than 50 years of age. Data were collected from the medical records of all hospitalized patients between January 1, 1982 and December 31, 1982. To complete the data base, all death certificates indicating AMI as the cause of death were also reviewed. According to the available medical records and death certificates, 118 people under 50 years of age experienced AMI during the one-year study period (68.6% among males and 31.4% among females). The average age of onset was 41.25 years among mean and 39.02 among women. The general mortality rate was 67.8% but among hospitalized patients it was 493%. The patients were usually married and 48.2% of them worked in a low income activity. The most frequent complications of AMI were ventricular fibrillation, asystole, cardiogenic shock and heart failure. Arterial hypertension was very frequent in both sexes and smoking was found in 81.5% of patients. Autopsy was performed in 30% of the cases. There is need for an effective government policy on cardiovascular disease.
