Acute intermittent porphyria and the Klüver -- Bucy syndrome

Acute intermittent porphyria is frequently associated with transient neurologic complications and is occasionally associated with serious permanent disability; the related neurologic conditions range from uncomfortable neuropathies to suicidal depression. We have not found a previous report of acute intermittent porphyria as a possible cause of the Kluver- Bucy syndrome. The association merits recognition because the syndrome usually implies a grave prognosis with extensive structural injury to the brain. In this case both the usual complications of acute intermittent porphyria and this uncommon neurologic syndrome were reversible.
