P. Boudes responds to an article by Glatt and Chirgwin (Archives of Internal Medicine (1990) 150, 271-279) stating the advantages of using lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity levels in the diagnosis of HIV-related P. carinii pneumonia. He comments that the test is used in his institution with great satisfaction and allows specific treatment without delay, even before the direct identification of P. carinii. Glatt and Chirgwin reply that the role of LDH as a diagnostic tool has not been investigated thoroughly enough to draw statistically significant conclusions.
