Indonesia's transmigration programme is the largest rural settlement scheme in the world today, and continues to receive high priority from the government. The paper is based on a study of the Bedol Desa scheme, conducted by sampling 119 of the 286 couples who remained behind in the relocated village of Kedungrejo in Wonogiri's kecamatan Nguntoronadi, and 57 of the 91 couples who went from Kedungrejo to Bengkulu, in southern Sumatra. Following an outline of the circumstances in Wonogiri and the preparations for Bedol Desa, the socioeconomic conditions of the stayers, including the effects of the inundation of the dam are discussed, and the stayers' reasons for resisting Bedol Desa transmigration are examined. The socioeconomic conditions of the movers are considered in a similar manner, with special attention to their progress once they reached Bengkulu. Conclusions concern this transmigration model.
