Ventricular arrhythmias are one of the major immediate complication of acute myocardial infarction because they can provoke haemodynamical abnormalities, enlargement of infarction and sudden death. Different electrical reactions in the cell induced by ishaemia can provoke later contraction "reentry" mechanism and appearance of automatic contraction, and thus ventricular arrhythmias. Ventricular arrhythmias were analyzed in 210 patients with acute myocardial infarction. A very favourable effect was obtained with preventively given xylocain and in some patients, novocamid. Calcium antagonists were also given to the patients from the beginning and the also contributed to this good preventive effect. Ventricular arrhythmias were rare, but they were the cause of death in 52.3% of our patients.
