Malaria prophylaxis and self-therapy in airline crews

The risks to airline crews of acquiring malaria if they overnight in malaria-endemic areas are highlighted. It is suggested that flights to high malaria risk areas should be clustered in 1 or 2 months each year, and that the aircrews take continuous chemoprophylaxis for no longer than 3 months per year. In addition, it is pointed out that if the crew members visit remote areas, they should carry a standby drug, to be used only if medical care is not readily available. The best standby drug remains to be determined.
