Isolation and identification of the W-88 strain of spotted fever group rickettsiae from a human case in Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia

A strain of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsia was isolated from a resident of Tongliao City, Nei Menggu, China. This is the 1st report of isolation of SFG rickettsiae from an urban resident in China. When this strain was compared by indirect immunofluorescence assay with 7 prototype strains and 6 Chinese strains of SFG rickettsiae and with 1 species-specific and 1 group reactive monoclonal antibody, the new strain and all 6 other Chinese strains were found identical to Rickettsia sibirica.
