Serological evidence of infection by spotted fever group rickettsiae in Karnataka State

Human sera from patients with various ailments and healthy normal individuals were examined for serological evidence of prior exposure to spotted fever group (SF) rickettsiae. Of the 781 sera examined, 19 (2.4%) were positive for SF antibodies. Sera of 197 goats, 142 sheep, 32 reptiles, 27 dogs, 77 cattle, 14 buffalos, 39 rats, 4 pigs and 4 bandicoots and wheys obtained from 25 milk samples from cows were also examined for antibodies to SF group rickettsiae. The seroprevalence of SF rickettsioses in the animals was 1.1%.
