Injection of the infectious non-replicating reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) vector directly beneath the fowl blastoderm led to infection of embryonic stem cells. Vector sequences were present in a variety of specialised tissues of embryos and mature birds derived from infected blastoderms. Breeding studies showed that replication-defective REV vectors can transfer heritable, non-viral genetic information into the fowl germ line.
