Forty-seven sows, 4-8 days before farrowing, were treated against gastro-intestinal worms with 7.5 g per animal of Atgard V (equiv. to 1.5 g dichlorvos), 150 mg/kg Concurat (equiv. to 15 mg/kg tetramisole) or 100 mg/kg of Thiabenzole (equiv. to 50 mg/kg of thiabendazole). Thirty-two untreated sows served as controls. The efficacy of treatment was assessed by faecal examinations and larval cultures on the day of treatment and at various intervals up to 50 days thereafter. Of the treated and control animals, 47 had mixed infections with Hyostrongylus rubidus and Oesophagostomum spp., while the remainder had Oesophagostomum spp. only. All three drugs were well tolerated by the sows and had no ill effect on their litters. Tetramisole and thiabendazole proved effective against H-rubidus and Oesophagostomum spp., while dichlorvos was effective against the latter and moderately effective against H. rubidus. Faecal excretion of worm ova ceased 3 days after treatment with dichlorvos and 4 days after treatment with the other two drugs, but a few animals from all three treatment groups recommenced passing ova in their faces 22 days after treatment.
