Attempts were made to cultivate the trypanosomes at 37 deg C in tissue cultures. Multiplication up to five-fold was obtained during the first 24 hours and after that the trypanosomes survived in diminishing numbers up to 10 days. The presence of tissue cultures was essential for the initial multiplication. Survival was promoted by changing the medium every 1-2 days, by the presence of a few erythrocytes, and by previous adaptation of the strain of trypanosomes through alternate animal/culture passage.
