Epithelial neoplasms were observed on the mouth of 21 farmed coho salmon in Japan. The neoplasms were characterized as papillomas consisting of abnormally proliferating epithelial basal-like cells. There were no other changes in other organs. Virus isolated from the neoplasms in RTG-2 and CHSE-214 cells showed cytopathic effects within 7 days with syncytia formation and chromatin migration. The virus was neutralized by anti- Oncorhynchus masou virus immune serum.
