Describes a training course for participants from Africa, Latin America and the Mediterranean region, run by FAO and EAAFRO and financed by DANIDA, covering theoretical and practical aspects of tree improvement. Lectures were given on the principles of variation, selection and inheritance, the relations of heredity and environment, species and provenance trials, seed source classification, seed collection. handling and certification, individual selection, seed orchards, progeny trials, breeding for disease resistance, the economics and planning of tree improvement programmes and international programmes in forest gene resources. Case histories are presented on Pinus caribaea and Tectona grandis.
