The uses of negative contrast electron microscopy described include the (group) identification of viruses routinely isolated in eggs and tissue culture and also direct demonstration of viruses in clinical material. The technique is particularly valuable when mixtures of viruses are present: thus some apparently pure pools of virus were shown by electron microscopy to contain a contaminating agent and, furthermore, mixtures of viruses were commonly encountered in routine diagnostic work.
