Recent progress on the molecular biology and biological activities of ovine trophoblast protein-1 (oTP-1) and bovine trophoblast protein-1 (bTP-1) is reviewed. The discovery that these compounds are interferons has raised questions regarding the mechanism by which interferon-like proteins might interact with the maternal system, and how the production of oTP-1 and bTP-1 might be controlled. The role of interferons in reproduction is considered.
