A statement by the Alabama Health Officer announces the formation of a Task Force to study and report to the legislature findings and recommendations about family planning, teenage pregnancy, prenatal care, obstetrics, infant and child health. Most prenatal care in Alabama goes to women at lowest risk for low birthweight babies. Teen pregnancies make up 18% of Alabama's births. These mothers are least likely to get any prenatal care and are at highest risk for low birthweight and other handicapping conditions in their offspring. The trend towards discontinuation of obstetrical services affects the poor most adversely. The newest formed task force will consist of state officials, business leaders, health providers, consumers, advocacy groups and mass media personnel. It will report to the 1987 legislature and serve to develop priorities for child health.
