Cryptococcal meningitis occurring in HIV infected individuals

Cases of Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis are reported in 3 men (31-, 29- and 54-yr-old) with HIV infection. India ink preparations and fungal cultures of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were positive in all cases. All patients were treated with amphotericin B followed by fluconazole. Two patients died, although 1 had shown improvement in CSF parameters.
