When plague appeared in Java, it was not immediately recognized-cases were so severe that, because of their short duration, buboes did not develop. Dead rats were not found, and field rats which were caught were not infected. Finally, through the efforts of van Logh'em, in the bamboo beams of a deserted house were found dead rats of another species. Thereafter, rat-proofing and other antiplague measures brought the disease under control.
