Part of a special section on computers in science. A sidebar highlights the security problems of the web programming language Java. Java's ability to download and run foreign programs--applets in Javaspeak--makes it vulnerable to virus attack. Although Java has built-in security measures, computer experts have already found ways of bypassing them. The problem may seem to be worrying only computer experts at the moment, but if Java becomes the backbone of a new virtual marketplace, Internet vendors and their customers may find themselves the victims of hostile applets that steal their money.
