Milk was obtained 3-24 weeks after delivery from groups of Thai women given 2 types of oral contraceptive pill or a steroid by injection. Hungarian women received only pills. Two of the treatments decreased the fat content of milk from Thai women only. A pill containing levonorgestrel and ethinyl oestradiol increased the proportion of short-chain fatty acids in milk fat from both ethnic groups and differences between these groups could be due to differences in fatty acids of the controls. Fat supplied about 10-15 and 38-42% of dietary energy in Thai and Hungarian women, respectively.
