The paper evaluates the past, present and future role of wildlife as a provider of protein in a typical humid savanna country where tsetse fly is prevalent. Animal protein production in Zamiba is assessed, and the role of wildlife as a source of protein is discussed (subsistence hunting by traditional farmers, subsistence cropping on commercial farms, commercial cropping by native authorities, etc). Possible strategies for domesticating or translocating wildlife are considered briefly. Suggestions for improving the development of wildlife as a resource in Zambia include the integration of wildlife and fish farming development in wetlands, and further work on incorporation into farming systems of small animals and birds (duikers, steinboks, cane rats, pigeons, etc.).
