The role of rural women in the decision making process in agriculture is examined based on data collected in Kairabad and Machharehta development blocks, Sitapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India [n=200, 1997/98]. The extent of participation of women in 14 decision making areas was analysed using a three-point scale (whether they were only consulted, whether their opinion was considered, and their involvement in the final decision). The results show that the extent of participation of women in the final decision was highest (28%) for storage of farm produce, followed by purchase and sale of land and animals, and marketing of farm produce. The level of participation of women in decision making was influenced by age, level of education, joint or nuclear family, cash, land holding and socioeconomic status.
