Role of women in decision making areas in poultry farming in district Nadia - West Bengal

100 women in Nadia district, West Bengal, India, were surveyed to: examine the extent of women's participation in decision making in poultry farming; study the pattern of decision making in income-earning activities; and analyse the factors affecting women's participation in decision making. The results show that about 12.66% of the sample are consulted and opinion is considered from 20.33% of them only. About 52.50% of the respondents' opinions are considered for final decision. It is noted that poultry farming is the only activity where the participation of female members is dominating. The pattern of decision making in income-earning activities indicates that in a majority of the sample, husbands alone have taken the decision (40%) and the participation of women in decision making is also found to be 40%. In the case of poultry and marketing, women have played a major role in decision making (86%) and the participation of women is noted to be 100%. The type of family system and socioeconomic status are the more important factors of women's participation.
