315 women who had given birth during the last five years were interviewed about their children. They had given birth to 531 children, 104 of whom had died. The mortality was 15.3% before the age of 1 year, and 20.1% before the age of 2 years, but the real figures may be somewhat higher. Children whose mothers go through frequeny childbirths have a dramatically increased mortality. The increase is been bigger in the second than in the first year of life. Measles is responsible for an even bigger percentage of child-deaths than was suspected. The disease kills 4.3% of all children born, before they reach the age of two years, in a population where vaccination-coverage is poor.
