The paper investigates the effect of urban migration from relatively underdeveloped districts in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi on rural development in the migrant's homeland. Most skilled and unskilled workers, either living alone or with a nuclear family, were found to retain good relations with their native home, and send money for the betterment of family members. Most of the money sent in cash was used for house construction, or the purchase of cattle or modern agricultural equipment. In a few cases savings were invested in the purchase of agricultural land. The situation was not regarded as being satisfactory, since the increased living costs at the place of migration greatly limited savings. The situation could be improved by developing industrial estates near underdeveloped rural areas, in order to minimize worker's expenses and allow more funds to be used in rural area development.
