The chapter outlines some of the trends in the development of agricultural geography. The complexity of the agricultural landscape has meant that theoretical progress has been rather slow. However, explanations that have been developed can be grouped into three broad categories: environmental, economic and behavioural perspectives. The characteristics of each and the principal analytical methods employed are examined. Each of these perspectives has formed a focal point for research in agricultural geography since 1945. No single viewpoint in isolation is sufficient to explain contemporary agricultural patterns. An integrated approach is required which recognizes the contribution each can make to understanding the complexity of the agricultural landscape.
