During 1984-86 a PM study of hens at the end of their first laying season showed that the prevalence of magnum tumours varied from 0 to 49% in various lines of specific pathogen-free (SPF) flocks and from 14 to 78% in lines of layer breeding flocks. No magnum tumours were seen in 75 quails of a laboratory breeding line or in 200 ducks from a commercial breeding line. The prevalence of magnum tumours was significantly different over the years in 4 of the 7 lines of SPF flocks studied. A significant association between the presence of magnum tumours and laying was revealed. It is suggested that regression of the oviduct when birds go out of lay is accompanied by regression of the tumours.
