As part of an investigation of the role of exogenous oestriol in avian reproduction, 12 adult female pigeons (aged approx. 3 months) were injected daily for 7 days with 50 micro g oestriol, and a further 12 birds were injected with oil (controls). Treatment induced functional inactivity of the ovary, as indicated by the high frequency of follicular atresia evident in photomicrographs, by the weights of the ovary (17.4+or-5.98 and 19.83+or-2.95 mg resp. in treated and control femalefemale) and oviduct (1537.8+or-205.2 and 111.8+or-16.31 mg, P less than 0.001), and by the accummulation of cholesterol in the ovary (1659.0+or-172.0 vs. 403.0+or-17.5 micro g/100 mg tissue, P less than 0.001).
