Nocardia osteomyelitis. Case report and review of the literature

A case of N. brasiliensis osteomyelitis involving a metatarsal is reported in a 36-yr-old immunocompromised man. The patient was treated with debridement and antibiotics. Three weeks later, he developed seizures and 2 Nocardia abscesses were drained during a craniotomy. Unfortunately, the patient's leukaemia could not be controlled and he died 1 yr after surgery. At postmortem, Candida albicans pneumonia was found, but there was no evidence of recurrent Nocardia infection. Previously reported Nocardia osteomyelitis cases are reviewed.
