A gas chromatographic method is described and applied to fluid from sheep rumen and an artificial rumen. In sheep rumen fluid hydrogen was less than 1 nmole/ml but increased about 50-fold after feeding then decreased. The methane content was relatively high and rumen gas in equilibrium with rumen contents contained from 25 to 50%. The oxygen content was low and variable, 60+or- 10 and 8+or- 5 nmoles/ml in 2 experiments.
