Radiation may cause dangerous human health effects; the number of victims who develop radiation dermatitis and neoplasia make it evident that more adequate safety measures are needed for radiation workers and the general environment. The history of radiation hazards and radiation protection is reviewed; the recently published Recommendation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection are introduced.
