Changing views on sugar over the years are discussed. It is concluded that coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity and behavioural changes in children or adults cannot be ascribed specifically to use of sugar, but that sugar is, with other factors, implicated in dental caries. Various surveys in the Netherlands indicate that average intake of mono- and disaccharides does not exceed 15 to 25% of energy, as recommended by the Netherlands Nutrition Council.
