Studies on antifungal agents: aromatic acid hydrazones of o. vanillin, o. veratraldehyde, 5-bromo-o. vanillin and bourbonal

The synthesis and screening of a series of acid hydrazones derived from aromatic aldehydes including o-vanillin (3-methoxy-salicyalaldehyde), o-veratraldehyde (2,3-dimethoxy-benzaldehyde), 5-bromo-o-vanillin (5-bromo-3-methoxy salicyalaldehyde), bourbonal (3 ethoxy-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde) and 14 different acid hydrazides is reported. Antifungal activity was evaluated against Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, Microsporum gypseum and Candida albicans. None of the 56 acid hydrazones synthesized showed significant activity against C. albicans, but varying degrees of antimycotic activity were demonstrated against the dermatophytes tested.
