Body weight was estimated before and after and electrolyte losses were estimated by washing body and clothes of 9 persons who ran 10 000 m in a mean time of 40.5 min at mean air temperature of 21.3 degrees C and relative humidity of 35%. Mean body weight loss was 1.45 +or- 0.17 (s.d.) kg and mean loss of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium was 19 +or- 5, 5 +or- 2, 207 +or- 47 and 801 +or- 319 mg/kg body weight. Haematocrit was not increased markedly. There was no significant change in electrolyte concentrations in blood. Insulin was slightly decreased and glucose, free fatty acids and glycerol were increased.
