The comparative susceptibility of 9 geographical strains of Aedes albopictus to dengue virus serotypes 1, 2 and 4 was tested by allowing the mosquitoes to feed on pledgets soaked with a virus-erythrocyte suspension and by intrathoracic inoculation with the viruses. Variation in susceptibility within both serotype 1 and serotype 2 was found by feeding but no such significant differences were found by inoculation, so a "gut barrier" was evidently involved. Thresholds for oral infection were not the same for serotypes 1, 2 and 4. All the geographic strains of A. albopictus were most susceptible to serotype 2. Haikou strain was most susceptible to all 3 serotypes; Beijing and Chengdu strains were more susceptible to serotypes 1 and 2, respectively. The mosquito head squash test was modified by using only the brain for demonstrating dengue virus antigen by indirect fluorescent antibody test on tissue smears.
