Cholecystitis due to Schistosoma mansoni, fact or fancy

The authors report a single case of gallbladder involvement by Schistosoma mansoni at Puerto Rico. A 56-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of right hypochondrial pain (and tenderness) which radiated to her back; this pain was made worse by ingestion of fatty foods and was accompanied by nausea. After radiographic demonstration of gallstones, a cholecystectomy was performed. In addition to numerous multifaceted stones, chronic cholecystitis with numerous viable S. mansoni eggs surrounded by granulomas was demonstrated in the mucosa; when sectioned serially, an adult worm-pair was identified in a venule.G.C. Cook A case of S. mansoni infection of the gall-bladder is reported in a 56-year-old woman, referred to the hospital in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, with a 2-year history of right upper quadrant pain, which radiated to the back. The pain was accompanied by nausea on eating fatty foods. Cholelithiasis was diagnosed and cholecystectomy was performed, when numerous S. mansoni eggs were found in the mucosa and adult worms were found within a venule in the gall-bladder wall. The pathological changes observed are described and the aetiology of chronic cholecystitis is discussed.
