Gastroduodenal kinetic activity. Possible role of the duodenal bulb in controlling gastric emptying

Gastroduodenal motility was studied during the interdigestive phase and after antro-duodenal volumetric stimulus in 5 healthy men 19 to 75 years old using a 120-cm probe with 2 inflatable balloons 7 and 21 cm from the distal end. Mean motor antral threshold (minimum air volume able to evoke an antral motor reflex) was 35+or-5 ml. Repetition of the volumetric stimulus in the antrum, keeping the duodenal balloon inflated did not show any motor antral threshold. The threshold reappeared with similar volumes in every patient after deflating the duodenal balloon. Results indicate the existence of a negative duodenal-antral feed-back control of gastric emptying.
