The role of duodenal mucosal ferritin in controlling Fe absorption from the duodenal mucosa, was clarified. Normal or phlebotimied anemic male Wistar rats were given a dose of 90 mg of iron citrate by mouth once or twice at an interval of 15 min or normal male Wistar rats were given a dose of 500 .mu.g of iron ammonium citrate/100 g of body weight i.p. to determine, in the course of time after the Fe delivery, the SI (serum iron) level as well as the Fr-iron (ferritin-iron) and Fr-protein levels of the liver, spleen and duodenal mucosa. The RBC content in the blood, the SB (sideroblast) count and the E/M (erythroblast/marrow) ratio in the bone marrow, as well as hemosiderin deposit in the liver and spleen were also examined.
