Impurities may be present in pesticides due to the use of impure raw products for synthesis. They also may be formed during manufacturing and storage. These impurities may have a considerable contribution to the toxicity of the pesticide. Examples are given for impurities in leptophos, trifluralin, maleic hydrazide, 2, 4, 5-T, malathion and ethylene bis-(dithiocarbamates). It is necessary that the possible impact of impurities on the toxicity of commercial products should be considered. This may lead for some impurities to the allocation of maximum concentration limits -in technical grade products and/or maximum residue limits in treated crops.
