The family Heteroderidae, its 2 subfamilies (Heteroderinae and Meloidogyninae) and the nominal genera of Heteroderinae (Heterodera, Meloidodera and Cryphodera) are re-diagnosed. Meloidoderita is considered a genus inquirenda. Atalodera n.g. and Sarisodera n.g., both in Heteroderinae, are described from California, USA. Atalodera has no cyst stage, female cuticle with lace-like pattern, anus and vulva on a terminal prominence, no fenestration around vulva.
