During the past year, this laboratory has made extensive use of the AOAC gas chromatographic method for the determination of volatile acids in application to eggs. Our experience has led to the development of several modifications that provide greater flexibility, speed, and economy without altering the chemical approach of the method. The hasis for some of these modifications was established in the more recently developed gas chromatographic method for lactic and succinic acids. This report describes these alternatives and several observations that were made. Specific details of the modifications are presented. The method as modified has been adopted as official first action as an alternative to 17.040, 17.041, and 18.035–18.038.
