The role of glucose and volatile fatty acids (VFA) as energy sources for brain tissue in non-ruminant (dog) and ruminant (goat) animals was compared by measuring the arterio-venous differences of these metabolites in the blood during circulation to the brain. In order to produce detectable levels in dog blood, VFA were constantly infused into both dogs and goats during the experiment. These results indicate that, even though glucose is the major metabolite in both these species, more acetate is utilized for metabolism in brain tissue of goats than of dogs.
