The need for long-acting contraceptive methods has led to the development of several classes of contraceptive devices, including medicated intra-uterine devices, subdermal implants and intravaginal rings. This review emphasizes controlled release contraceptive systems that are under clinical development or that already have reached the market. The distinct approaches in designs and manufacturing techniques applied are discussed. New designs are the single-rod contraceptive implant, the biodegradable hollow fibre and the 2-compartment combined contraceptive vaginal ring. Manufacturing techniques applied include injection moulding and melt extrusion.
