Rigid removable dressing in a case of poor wound healing

The rigid removable dressing (RRD) technique for postoperative care of below-the-knee (13-K) amputees was introduced by Wu and associates in 1979. This system provides many advantages over other methods of stump shrinkage and protection, including better wound protection and the ability to easily observe the stump during progressive weight-bearing activities. There is some reluctance to use this system in the presence of an open lesion. In our center, we have successfully used the RRD to treat more than 50 patients with open stump lesions. Our process is exemplified in a patient with severe wound dehiscence.
