Serum and breast milk antibodies to food antigens in African mothers and relation to their diet

Antibodies against the bread protein gliadin and against the cow milk proteins beta -lactoglobulin and IgG were detected in the serum and/or milk of 93 mothers in Zaire even though they consumed little or no bread and (because of lactose intolerance) no milk. Levels of these antibodies did not change during a 2-month study in which the women ingested 600 ml cow milk daily under supervision. It was concluded that the antibodies were not due to dietary antigens but to other, unknown factors.
